Austin’s Hottest Events this Holiday Season
Austin is never at a loss for unique experiences, especially during the holiday season, but the sheer amount of activities can most certainly be overwhelming. And, if you’re anything like us, feeling overwhelmed leads to decision paralysis. No bueno.
We started Wander/Gather because we believe in the power of hugs, handshakes, and high fives. We believe in community. That means getting out from behind our phone screens to do life side-by-side. And, we can’t do life side-by-side with others when we’re in a state of constant contemplation about where to actually go and what to actually do.
So, we’re coming in hot with this holiday’s hottest. Whether you’re into the arts or fitness, we’ve gathered some of Austin’s best opportunities to celebrate with friends, family, significant others, and strangers.
Art: EAST Austin Studio Tour
November 10-11, 17-18
EAST is a city-wide event in which local artists open the doors of their studios to the public. It began in 2003 with just 28 artists. This year, there are almost 600 venues. We love this event for a variety of reasons. One, it epitomizes what makes Austin very unique. Two, it encourages movement. Since the art is strategically placed around the city, you are not handcuffed to any single location. Three, it serves as a platform for great conversation. Because, when you look at great art, you’re going to talk about it. For more information, click here.
Fitness: TruFusion Workout hosted by Wander/Gather
Sweat. Smile. Repeat. For free. Yes, free. We’re teaming up with South Austin’s newest studio, TruFusion, to bring you Barefoot Bootcamp - a class that promises to build a mobile, strong, and powerful physique. Be ready to sweat using your own body weight, HIIT, and Pilates. Dalia Rhodes, the Director of Fitness for TruFusion, will be leading the workout. If you haven’t heard, TruFusion is launching its first location in South Austin in early 2019. They have five boutiques under one roof and will offer over 240 classes a week in 65 different workout styles. We’re honored to be teaming up with them for this sneak peek. Once we’re done sweating, we’ll consume some adult beverages and engage in some post-Thanksgiving-week mingles. No partner? No problem. All you need for this fitness-fest is you. Roll out your mat, we’ll pump the jams, and you’ll find plenty of fellow Austinites sweating it out next to you. Stay tuned to our Instagram account for more info.
Film: AMV FEST
AMVFest is a film festival that celebrates the best music videos in the world across the big screens of Austin. This year will be the fourth year for the event, and it’s shaping up to feature all of Austin’s funkiest venues with hundreds of music videos, world premieres, afterparties, workshops, and The Awards Show. It’s the perfect day date for you and your bestie to scope out some music and some muse-ic (if you get what we’re saying). Click here for more info.
Theater: The Nutcracker
The holiday season doesn’t get more festive than a viewing of “The Nutcracker.” And, Ballet Austin brings us this year’s 56th annual production of America’s iconic Christmas event. Hundreds of dancers. Beautiful sets. Costumes. And, of course, the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Watch the young heroine face her fears, rescue her prince, and dream big this December. Dare we say that this play calls for some serious girl power in the audience. For ticket info, click here.
Dining: Eden East
Amazing Thursday nights are on your horizon thanks to Eden East, a true farm-to-table dining experience. Grab your honey (or blind date), pick up a bottle of wine (it’s BYOB), and hitch a ride to this unique atmosphere in East Austin. Our favorite part: guests dine together at community tables situated under a majestic Elm Tree. Thursdays promise a live band and complimentary cocktails from Deep Eddy. Boom. Instant romance (we do what we can). Scope out more info here, and note that Eden East will accommodate most dietary restrictions.
Live Music: Continental Club
The Continental Club has been rockin’ South Austin since 1955 and stakes claim to being one of the oldest continuously running clubs in Austin (yes, super rad). If you’re grinding away at your 9-5 this holiday season and can’t commit to plans too far into the future, save this page to your browser favorites. We’re going to take it one step further and boldly suggest some team bonding over beers and bass. Some might use the word “sketchy” to describe this famous club on South Congress, but we prefer to use the word “swag.”
